Although we can function without our sight, we rely heavily on vision to live our everyday lives.
The eye is one of the most complex organs in our bodies, which is no surprise when you begin to understand the challenges in providing vision.
Our eyes work in a similar way to a camera. Light enters through the cornea, the amount of light being controlled by the pupil which opens and closes in a similar way to a camera shutter. Light is focused by a lens onto the retina which reacts to the incoming light, processes it and sends it to the brain via the optic nerve. It is in the brain that the signals from the retina are interpreted and our perception of the world around us is created.
